Test against current results: Apply the technique to a subset of pages or a test domain and measure whether it produces the claimed result in your specific context. The best evidence is data from your own site in the current algorithm environment.
Consider incentive alignment: Who benefits from promoting this tactic? Agencies selling low-quality directory submissions benefit from the belief that directory submissions help. Tool vendors benefit from metrics (like keyword density) that their tools calculate. Be appropriately skeptical of claims that serve the financial interests of those making them.
