Common Objections and Responses

"It feels inefficient and frustrating." Yes, and that's precisely why it works. The difficulty is desirable. Your feelings during practice don't predict retention multiple studies show people consistently misjudge interleaving as less effective despite evidence showing it's more effective. Trust the research over your feelings.

"I need to master basics first." You need sufficient understanding, not complete mastery, before interleaving. If you're completely lost on concept A, don't interleave yet. But once you have basic understanding (can solve problems with effort), begin interleaving. Waiting for complete mastery before interleaving wastes the learning benefits of discrimination practice.

"My test is next week I don't have time for slow practice." If your goal is shortterm performance (test tomorrow), blocked practice might be strategically better. Elaboration means enriching new information by connecting it to existing knowledge, generating examples, creating analogies, explaining mechanisms, and asking how and why questions.
