Reversible vs. Irreversible Decisions

Too low and you accept subpar options; too high and you've just redefined satisficing as maximizing.
Satisficing example: Buying a laptop. Set criteria: at least 16GB RAM, 512GB storage, decent battery life, under $1,500. Research for 23 hours, find three options that meet criteria, pick one based on availability and brand familiarity. Total time: 34 hours. Result: a perfectly functional laptop you're happy with.
Maximizing example: Buying a laptop. Read 50+ reviews, compare 20+ models, track price fluctuations, obsess over minor specs differences, worry about missing the perfect sale, secondguess after purchase. Total time: 20+ hours. Result: a marginally better laptop that cost 10% less, but you're anxious you could have done better and you burned a day of your life optimizing a tool, not using it.
The satisficer got 90% of the value with 20% of the effort. The maximizer got 100% of the value with 500% of the effort. Unless your time is worth nothing, satisficing wins.
Premortem Analysis
Core idea: Before committing to a decision, imagine it failed catastrophically. Now work backward: how did this happen?
Psychologist Gary Klein developed the premortem technique to counteract optimism bias and groupthink in organizational decisionmaking. Unlike a postmortem (analyzing failure after it happens), a premortem happens before commitment, when you can still change course. Bayesian Updating
Core idea: Update beliefs systematically as new evidence arrives. Your current belief should be your prior belief adjusted by new information.
Named after Thomas Bayes, an 18thcentury statistician and minister, Bayesian reasoning is how you should update probabilities in light of new evidence. Start with a prior probability based on base rates or past experience. When new evidence arrives, ask: how likely is this evidence if my hypothesis is true? How likely if it's false? The key is actually updating not just collecting evidence, but letting it change your mind proportionally to its strength. Most people commit one of two errors: they anchor on initial beliefs and ignore new information (confirmation bias), or they overreact to recent data and ignore base rates (availability bias).
