About When Notes Fly

An independent publication of in-depth guides and explainers. We take one subject at a time and explain how it actually works, in plain language, with sources you can check.

What We Are

When Notes Fly is an independent publication of in-depth guides and explainers across six areas: concepts, technology, explainers, work and skills, culture, and ideas.

Each guide takes a single subject and works through it properly: what it is, how it works, what the evidence says, where people get it wrong, and how to apply it. Where a guide draws on studies or documents, it names and links them so you can check the source yourself. When something is genuinely contested or uncertain, we say so rather than picking a side and hiding the doubt.

We are not a news site, a personal blog, or a feed of trending takes. The aim is a reference library you can come back to, with each guide written to be useful long after it is published, and corrected in the open when we get something wrong.

What We Cover

Concepts

Mental models, psychology, decision-making, systems thinking, ethics, frameworks, and the foundational ideas that explain how the world works.

Explainers

How-it-works guides, beginner introductions, comparisons, case studies, step-by-step breakdowns, and data-driven research roundups.

Technology

AI and machine learning, software development, cybersecurity, cloud, data analytics, automation, tools, and how technology shapes careers.

Work & Skills

Career growth, leadership, productivity, project management, communication, critical thinking, and professional skills that compound over time.

Culture

Internet and digital culture, global perspectives, creator economy, social norms, language, education systems, and forces shaping how we live together.

Ideas

Business ideas, startup concepts, AI and automation opportunities, creative strategies, productivity systems, and revenue models worth exploring.

Our Editorial Principles

01

Sources You Can Check

Guides are built from primary sources: named studies, official documentation, and authoritative references. Claims are attributed to where they come from, not asserted on our own authority, and we link sources so you can verify them.

02

Honest About Uncertainty

Where evidence is mixed, contested, or thin, we say so. Speculation is labelled as speculation. We would rather tell you what is not settled than flatten a complex subject into a confident, tidy answer.

03

No Filler

We do not republish press releases, rehash viral takes, or recycle thin summaries. Each guide is written to explain a subject in depth, not to chase a trend or fill a page.

04

Reviewed Before Publishing

Every guide is reviewed for accuracy and sourcing before it goes live, and held to the same standard regardless of topic. Claims that cannot be supported are cut rather than dressed up.

05

Clear Communication

Complex subjects deserve clear writing. We avoid jargon unless it is necessary, define technical terms, and never sacrifice clarity for the appearance of sophistication.

06

Corrected in the Open

When the evidence changes or a reader catches an error, we update the guide and note what changed. Nothing is quietly deleted. A correction is a feature of how we work, not an embarrassment to hide.

07

Editorial Independence

We are not beholden to advertisers, sponsors, or outside agendas. Editorial decisions serve the reader and accurate understanding, not revenue targets or ideological commitments.

How a Guide Is Made

Every guide goes through the same steps before it is published.

Research

We start from primary sources: studies, official documentation, and authoritative references, rather than summaries of summaries. The goal is to understand the subject well enough to explain it accurately.

Synthesis

We connect findings across sources, work out what actually matters, and explain it in plain language without losing the nuance that makes the subject worth understanding.

Review

Each guide is reviewed for accuracy and sourcing before it goes live. Claims are checked against their sources, and anything that cannot be supported is cut.

Updates

Guides are living documents. When the evidence changes or a reader catches an error, we update the guide and note the change. Nothing is quietly deleted.

Who Writes for When Notes Fly

Most guides carry the byline When Notes Fly Editorial. We use a team byline, like a reference publication, because a guide usually passes through more than one set of hands before it is published: research, writing, and an editorial review. Behind that byline is an editorial team working to one standard, with one named person accountable for it.

Researched

Each guide is built from primary sources, named studies, official documentation, and authoritative references, rather than from other people's summaries.

Reviewed

Before a guide is published it is reviewed for accuracy and sourcing. Unsupported claims are cut. The same standard applies to every topic.

Accountable

One named editor is responsible for the standard across the publication. Sourcing questions and corrections reach a real person, not a void.

See who is accountable and how we review every guide on our editorial team and editorial standards pages.

When Notes Fly covers six areas: concepts, technology, explainers, work and skills, culture, and ideas. The same standard applies to all of them: primary sources, named and linked, with the mechanism explained and the limits of what is known stated plainly.

We write for people who want to understand a subject properly, not just well enough to repeat it. That means naming the studies, explaining how something works rather than just stating that it does, and being honest about what is uncertain.

Every guide is reviewed for accuracy and sourcing before publication. When the evidence changes, the guide is updated. When we get something wrong, we correct it and note the correction in the open.
