Keysar and Henly's research suggests that immediate feedback from listeners allows experts to recalibrate, but without feedback, experts default to their own reference frame. Deliberate practice in explaining concepts to genuine novices — and attending carefully to where understanding breaks down — is more effective than generic 'simplification' advice.
