What would change is our cosmological picture. We would know that our universe had a creator — or rather, a programmer — and that creator had goals that may or may not align with our welfare. The simulation could be altered or terminated. The laws of physics could, in principle, be patched. This is simultaneously alarming and, as Chalmers notes, theologically familiar: it is essentially the position of someone who believes in a creator god who could intervene in the world, constrained only by the god's interest in maintaining the simulation's coherence.

The practical irrelevance of the hypothesis for everyday life is actually one of the main arguments Chalmers marshals for not worrying about it.
