Camus regarded this as also a refusal to face the absurd, a capitulation rather than a response.His alternative was revolt: acknowledging the absurd fully, without resolution or escape, and choosing to live fully within it. His image for this is Sisyphus, condemned by the gods to roll a boulder up a hill for eternity only to watch it roll back down. This is meaningless labor, deliberately so. But Camus invites us to imagine Sisyphus happy — not because the task is rewarding, but because he does not need it to be. His defiance of meaninglessness, his passionate engagement with his fate despite its futility, is itself the expression of a free human being.Absurdism is not nihilism. Camus did not argue that nothing matters. He argued that we must act as if things matter — love, create, resist injustice — without requiring a cosmic guarantee that they do. This distinction has been enormously influential in existentialist ethics and in secular approaches to psychological wellbeing.
Can meaning be found in suffering?
This is Frankl's most challenging and most important claim: that meaning is available even in conditions of suffering that cannot be avoided or changed. He was careful to distinguish this from the view that suffering is good or that one should seek it out. Unnecessary suffering that can be prevented should be prevented. But unavoidable suffering — illness, loss, confinement, death — confronts every human life, and the question of how to respond to it is not optional.Frankl observed that those who found a 'why' — a reason to endure, a future orientation, a sense that their suffering itself could be an act of witness, resistance, or service — bore unavoidable suffering better than those who could not. His third source of meaning — 'the attitude we take toward unavoidable suffering' — suggests that even in conditions of maximum constraint, one domain of freedom remains: how we orient ourselves toward what is happening.This view resonates with research in post-traumatic growth (Tedeschi and Calhoun). Studies of cancer patients, accident survivors, veterans, and bereaved individuals find that a significant proportion — roughly half in many studies — report meaningful positive psychological changes following severe trauma: greater appreciation for life, deeper relationships, renewed sense of priorities, enhanced sense of personal strength, and greater spiritual depth. This is not universal, and it is not a reason to minimize trauma. But it suggests that suffering can be a catalyst for a reorganization of meaning that results in a life experienced as more meaningful than before the trauma.Religious and philosophical traditions have long recognized this. Buddhist teaching holds that suffering (dukkha) is not something to flee but to understand, and that this understanding is itself a path to liberation. Stoic practice deliberately confronted mortality and loss as a discipline of perspective. Frankl brought these ancient insights into clinical psychology with evidentiary grounding.
Does having a sense of purpose actually affect health and longevity?
The evidence is now robust that a sense of purpose is a significant predictor of health and longevity, independent of other variables. The most cited study is Patrick Hill and Nicholas Turiano's 2014 analysis of the MIDUS (Midlife in the United States) dataset, which followed over 6,000 adults for 14 years. After controlling for age, health status, and other wellbeing measures, people who scored higher on purpose in life had a 15% lower mortality rate over the follow-up period.Eric Kim and colleagues found similar effects specifically for cardiovascular health: higher purpose was associated with lower risk of heart attack, stroke, and sleep disturbances. The mechanism appears to involve multiple biological pathways. People with a strong sense of purpose engage in more health-protective behaviors — they exercise more, sleep better, have regular health screenings — partly because they have reason to take care of themselves. They also show lower inflammatory markers and more stable HPA axis functioning under stress, suggesting that purpose operates through both behavioral and physiological channels.Research on older adults finds that purpose protects against Alzheimer's disease and cognitive decline. The Rush Memory and Aging Project found that higher purpose scores were associated with slower rates of cognitive decline and lower rates of Alzheimer's diagnosis over follow-up.These findings align with the broader social determinants of health literature: psychological states are not merely responses to physical health but are themselves causes of it. The body does not cleanly separate from the mind it houses. A life organized around purposes that matter to the person living it appears to generate biological conditions that are protective against a wide range of mortality and morbidity risks. Purpose is not a luxury or a philosophical indulgence; it appears to be a health variable.
