Paul Grice's 1975 paper 'Logic and Conversation' proposed that conversations are guided by a general Cooperative Principle -- contribute as required by the purpose of the exchange -- elaborated through four maxims: quantity (say enough, but not too much), quality (say what you believe is true and have evidence for), relation (be relevant), and manner (be clear, orderly, and brief). J.L.
