Each account was coherent, internally consistent, and persuasive. They disagreed substantially with one another.

What they shared was the quality of inevitability. Reading these retrospective accounts, it is almost impossible not to feel that the crisis had to happen, that the warning signs were visible, that anyone paying attention could have seen it coming. Yet in 2006, with the same information available, almost no one did. The economists, regulators, and financial professionals who were closest to the data missed it.
