Structure: Two activities or actors compete for limited resources. The one that initially succeeds receives more resources, increasing its future success. The one that initially struggles receives fewer resources, decreasing its future performance. The gap widens regardless of inherent merit.

When you face a systemic problem, start by asking what leverage point you are targeting. If the answer is "we're adjusting a parameter," consider whether a higher-leverage intervention exists. Can you change the information flow? The rules? The goals? The mental models?

The antidote: Always ask: "What have we left out of this model? What assumptions are we making? What would change our understanding?" Hold models lightly, as tools for thinking rather than descriptions of truth.
