Everybody goes to work to earn money. However, when you have to commute a long way to get to your workplace, you can often end up spending a substantial amount of your wage on transportation costs alone. Unless you’re lucky enough to work somewhere that’s located in short walking distance from your home, the cost of the commute to work can be unavoidable. Luckily there are several things that you can do to save money on your daily journey to and from your job.
#1. Car Sharing:
One of the most popular methods of saving money on the monthly commute is sharing a car with other employees on the way to and from the workplace. Car sharing not only helps to you keep costs to a minimum by all pitching in for the cost of gas, it can also give you a break from driving yourself since it can be arranged on a rota with different employees taking the wheel each day. Many workplaces today have a carpool scheme in place, in order to help their employees save some money and be kinder to the environment at the same time. If there’s nobody at work who you can share with, you might be able to join a site such as Lift Share, where you can match up with suitable people in your area who are going the same way.
#2. Upgrade Your Car:
If you have no other option than to drive to work, then investing in a car that’s cheaper to run can certainly pay off in the long run. For example, electric or hybrid cars can be substantially cheaper to both insure and keep on the road; electric-only cars don’t require you to fill them up with gas, therefore can contribute to substantial savings over time. However, bear in mind that these types of cars are often more expensive to buy initially, so it’s down to you to determine whether it’s an investment worth making personally. You could also change your car’s oil to a high mileage synthetic oil if suitable, which burns less oil and is better for the environment, as well as cheaper in the long run.
#3. Use Public Transport:
Although it’s not always ideal to be on a crowded train or bus on the way to and from work, it can be the best option when it comes to saving money on your commute. If you live in an area that has good public transport connections to the area where you work, then buying a weekly or monthly public transport pass can be a far cheaper option for you than purchasing gas for your car and driving it daily.
Lastly, if you don’t live a long way away from your workplace, then you might want to think about cycling into work instead, which is completely free! Along with the money that you’ll be able to save on gas or public transport fees, you’ll also find that cycling is very beneficial for your health and well-being.
