There is one simple truth of women’s clothing: the larger you are, the harder it is to find cute clothes. This shouldn’t be the case. You should be able to find great clothes that fit no matter what your size. Unfortunately, that is not the case.
It gets even more difficult when you’re looking for genre or niche clothing. It’s not as difficult to head to Lane Bryant and find an every day dress or pair of pants that fit. It’s much more difficult to find something like a leather skirt and fishnet stockings. And if your feet are larger than a size 10, finding boots is nearly impossible. Doubly impossible if you’re looking for mid-shin or knee high boots.
So how do you go about finding punk clothes if you’re a plus sized girl? Are you simply out of luck? Or can you find something that will look great and fit great, too?
The first thing to do is to head to your local Torrid. While Torrid is a bit mainstream, they still have clothes that can be modified to the look you want. You may not find leather jackets with metal spikes, but you’ll find black skirts and stockings. While it’s not exactly punk, it’s at least in the right direction. And Torrid has the benefit of being a shop specifically for plus sized women, so you know you’ll be able to find things that fit.
Your next option is to head to the internet. While any good punk wants to shop locally, sometimes one has to make allowances. On the plus side, many of the internet shops that will sell plus sized punk clothing are going to be shops run by small time vendors. In many cases, it will even be someone who actually sews the clothing by hand. You can’t get much more local than that, at least in today’s economy. The internet culture turned the concept of local into a global phenomenon!
Lastly, you can always try to follow in the footsteps of the punks of old. Don’t worry about buying plus sized punk clothes. Buy clothes that fit, and then make them punk. The innovators of the fashion weren’t trying to look trendy, they were trying to make a statement. You can make the same statement, by eschewing the idea of corporate influence and pre-packaged sub-cultures. Find beautiful things to turn ugly, find ugly things to turn beautiful, and make a statement of your own.
Ultimately, it shouldn’t be as difficult as it is to find plus sized punk clothing. Women should be able to find clothing that fits no matter what style they want that clothing. Unfortunately, the world is what it is, and women are forced to deal with it. Still, that doesn’t mean you have to take it lying down. Be willing to look around, be dedicated to the search, and be willing to toss around some money. Do that, and you’ll be able to find some great outfits.
